Nature

The cabin is only a short walk from the shore of Loch Awe, where tremendous views across the water and of the landscape beyond are to be enjoyed. The waters are home to many fish, including pike, perch, char, and perhaps most notably, brown trout, for which the loch holds the record for the largest ever caught in the British Isles. Salmon fishing is available on the River Awe.
There is also a great deal of history to be discovered on the loch, including Innis Chonnell - the original stronghold of the Clan Campbell, dating back to the 13th century, or possibly earlier - and the remnants of several crannogs (man-made islands).
The Inverliever Forest, part of the Barnaline Estate, contains many lovely walks. These include the nearby Barnaline Oakwood Trail and Avich Falls Trail, which take you through ancient oak woods and tall conifers. A short walk from the cabin are the spectacular Avich Falls, these being the standout feature of the River Avich, which flows down the glacial valley from Loch Avich to Loch Awe.
The park, the loch and nearby forest, is a tremendous place for encountering and enjoying nature. The area is home to some of Scotland’s most notable wildlife. The pine marten, red squirrel, osprey, golden eagle, sea eagle, red, roe and sika deer, and otter, are all commonly seen in the area, though it is fair to say that spotting some of these does require a degree of patience!
Eating, Drinking and Local Amenities
A leisurely 10 minute walk through the park, towards its southern boundary, brings you to the social hub of the site, the Loch View Bar located in the Dalavich Community Centre. Opening hours for the bar vary, being open throughout the year on Friday and Saturday evenings, and increasing to 5 nights during the summer. A friendly atmosphere accompanies a fine choice of bottled ales. Also located at the centre are a launderette and children’s playground.
Just beyond the south entrance to the site, heading into the village itself, is the Dalavich Village Shop and Wild Rowan Cafe, where you can enjoy hot drinks and a selection of sweet or savoury food. And as another alternative to self-catering, don’t miss the delicious takeaway curries on offer at Black Rock, a 10 minute drive north from Dalavich. A little further up the road is the fabulous Kilchrenan Inn (5.0 tripadvisor rating).
